Tata Nexon EV Max made it to the World’s largest Motorable road reaching Umling La pass at 19,034 feet, Leh, India. The pass is not just the highest in India but it is the highest in the world.
In this article, we have tried to bring to you the performance of the Tata Nexon EV Max that was done through joint efforts of EVO and Tata Motors. We’ll check out how the EV performed in the terrains of Leh’s covering all the way to Umling La pass.
This challenge was undertaken when Leh was boiling with the Sun’s rays which makes a human uncomfortable at that temperature but Tata Nexon EV Max was as cool as cucumber. The journey started at 11,500 feet in Leh and it was flagged off by Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, deputy commissioner of LAHDC and it ended at 19,024 feet at Umling La pass, covering all the way from 11,500 feet in Leh to 14,764 feet in Hanle and finally Umling La.
When we hear EVs the first thing that rings in our ears is the charging. When I say driving EV in Leh you would think it’s a joke! But charging EVs is possible even in Leh. They have both the DC fast charging station and the AC chargers installed at public places and private resorts. The EVO team charged their Tata Nexon EV at the Fortune Resorts where the solar DC chargers were installed by Lion Charge. The Nexon EV Max can charge from 0-80% in 56 minutes.
The journey had three stoppages ranging from a 250-kilometer journey from Leh at 11,500 feet to 14,764 feet at Hanle, then crossing two high-altitude one at Chismule and the last at Umling La passes at 19,024 feet over 75 km. The journey started with a 99% charge and a range of 412km on the eco mode turning to sports mode when you want to enjoy the speed thrills.
The journey from Leh to Hanle was very smooth thanks to the 190mm ground clearance that makes it possible for Tata Nexon to make it a piece of cake. The scenery of Leh is filled with breathtaking views. No wonder people save for traveling to Leh and Ladakh.
Hanle marked the first stoppage for the EVO team and they experienced the world of stars there it seemed as if the Milky way was residing on earth. Apart from that, they managed to cover 254.3km saving a range of 156km and 56% charge on the EV. In the morning they set out again for the journey charging their EV with a 15A socket charger that comes in handy with the car.
Leaving Hanle they moved to Chismule 2,500 feet higher than Hanle where they took a small break to straighten their backs leaving a 121km of range left for the entire journey from 15,485 to 19,024 feet.
To make this ride smooth and prepare for the next 24km stoppage at Chismule, they set the car to Level 3 regen thus saving a lot of energy which also enables one-pedal driving all they need to do is get off the accelerator and the EV max will slow down.
Setting their journey again from Chismule and covering the steep roads that were higher than the Everest base camp saluting the valor of brave soldiers and BROs initiating in laying the land they continued their journey at a high altitude.
Mountains are filled with rugged and dusty roads but EVs have low rolling resistance tires made by MRF which you’ll notice when you are going down the hill. Another striking feature of the Tata Nexon EV Max that was remarkable during the journey is that it uses iVBAC brakes (Intelligent Vaccum-less boost and Active Control device) which doesn’t affect the performance of the car even in the mountains. Unlike the Vaccum-based electric car. In fact, EVs have the same amount of power, unlike ICE vehicles that lose their power in high altitudes.
Finally, you will be elated to know that they made it to the Umling La pass thus marking a drive on the highest public road anywhere in the world, kissing the highest summit reachable by an electric car.
The journey of Tata Nexon EV Max from Leh to Umling La pass has been certified by India’s books of records in 2022. Thus breaking the myth of charging, range, and performance of electric vehicles.
