In India, Tata Motors is the most reputable automaker, and its expansion into the EV market is evident. On November 14, the company took the most significant action to demonstrate its commitment to EV at the Tata Sons headquarters in Mumbai, where an MOU was signed with Cummins Inc. In order to create and develop zero-emission propulsion solutions for commercial vehicles in India. The partnership will concentrate on creating fuel cells, battery-powered electric vehicle systems, and internal combustion engines driven by hydrogen (BEVs).

Tom Linebarger, executive chairman of Cummins Inc., and N Chandrasekaran, executive chairman of Tata Sons, signed the Memorandum of Understanding.

How will Cummin Inc. help Tata on the road to Zero-emission?

A strong array of zero-emission propulsion technology is currently available from Cummins Inc. The Cummins B6.7H hydrogen engine has a maximum output of 290 horsepower and a maximum torque of 1,200 Nm. Modern technology is used in this brand-new engine architecture to increase power density, lower friction losses, and boost thermal efficiency.

The fourth-generation hydrogen fuel cell engine from Cummins Inc., created for heavy-duty vehicles and buses, is also included in the portfolio. 135 kW single and 270 kW dual fuel cell modules are both available. There is significant ownership of the systems.

Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) and Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) battery packs, each of which targets a particular duty cycle and application case, are both parts of Cummins’ battery range.

Cummin Inc. invests over $1 billion yearly in the development and research of new technology. By matching infrastructure readiness with technology readiness, Cummins’ approach reduces emissions from well-to-wheel, incorporates high emissions reductions, promotes widespread adoption due to affordability by utilizing the right technology at the right time, and will achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

This MoU strengthens their relationship even more and supports India’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2070 and “Energy for Sustainable Growth.” One of the first markets to get Cummins’ hydrogen engines, a crucial technology to promote decarbonization, will be India.

At the event, Mr. N Chandrasekaran, Executive Chairman, of Tata Sons and Chairman, of Tata Motors said, “The shift to sustainable mobility is irreversible and Tata Motors is committed to being amongst the leaders of green mobility. We are taking definitive steps to drive this global megatrend forward in each of our businesses. Working with partners who share the same vision is essential for this transition and we are delighted to strengthen our long-standing relationship with Cummins for their next-generation, hydrogen propulsion systems. We are excited to indigenize the cutting-edge hydrogen technology to offer our customers an expanded portfolio of green and future-ready commercial vehicles, accelerate the adoption of sustainable mobility in the country, and contribute towards India’s ‘net zero’ carbon emission goals.”
