Honda to introduce its first electric scooter in March 2024

Honda will enter the EV sector with its first electric scooter in March 2024. Powered by a stationary battery, it will have a top speed of 50 km/h, HMSI managing director and CEO Atsushi Ogata revealed.

Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India’s (HMSI) MD and CEO have announced that they will step into the EV segment with their first EV product by next year. He revealed this news at the launch event for the Activa H-Smart.

Ogata has said that they are locally developing the e-scooters in close coordination with Honda’s teams in Japan. And they aim to be ready with the first product around the same time next year, probably around 2023-’24.

Honda’s first all-electric products are likely to be introduced in March 2024 and will be based on the existing Activa with a transplanted electric powertrain replacing the engine. Ogata revealed that it would have a fixed battery setup and offer a top speed of 50 kmph.

Following the Activa-EV is the second electric scooter from the company based on an all-new platform. The second model of the company’s electric scooter features a removable battery and offers high performance just like any other electric scooter. “It has not been urgent for the company to invest in an EV program from a business perspective in recent years, but with growing market expectations, we will enter the EV segment next year.”

Ogata explained that HMSI could have previously served the Indian market with one of Honda’s EV products from China, but opted to work on an India-specific product. Over the past six months, the company has focused on preparing its electric motors and batteries for installation, and the majority of its investment in fiscal 2023-24 will be used to prepare its manufacturing infrastructure for ICE 2 production. In the same facility in a hybrid format.

HMSI says it will manufacture the electric motors in-house and install battery swap stations at all of its 6,000 consumer touchpoints across the country before launching its second e-scooter. However, the company believes that traditional electric scooters will dominate the Indian market in the foreseeable future due to the increased range per fuel tank.

“Customers with limited mileage will choose the Activa EV, but will want to own the ICE Activa to cover longer distances,” said Ogata.
