TATA PUNCH EV

Tata Motors recently unveiled its latest all-electric model, the Punch EV, in India, sparking anticipation among the public. The official launch date is set for January 17, making it Tata’s fourth foray into the electric vehicle market. The Punch EV is the first to feature Tata’s new Gen 2 EV architecture, known as acti.ev (active). Bookings are currently open, requiring a token amount of Rs 21,000. This model has quickly become one of the most awaited electric vehicles, reflecting the growing interest in sustainable transportation options.

Ahead of its scheduled launch, here are some key details about the upcoming Tata Punch EV:

DESIGN AND LOOKS

ELECTRIC CARS EVs by TATA motors

The Punch EV stands out with the most pronounced design differences compared to its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart among all Tata electric vehicles. Drawing inspiration from the Nexon EV, the front end notably resembles a scaled-down version of its electric sibling. A fresh look is introduced with a full-width LED light bar, a split headlamp setup characterized by trapezoidal housing for the main cluster, and a front bumper adorned with a faux silver skid plate. While the side profile and rear maintain a familiar appearance, notable updates include new alloy wheels and a dual-tone rear bumper. Notably, the Punch EV takes the lead as the first Tata electric vehicle to incorporate a front trunk (frunk), adding a practical and distinctive feature to its design.

BATTERY AND RANGE

While comprehensive technical specifications for the Punch EV are yet to be fully disclosed, it has been revealed that the model will be available in two variants: Standard and Long Range. Initial reports suggest that these variants will be equipped with 25kWh and 35kWh battery packs, respectively. The Standard variant is expected to feature a 3.3kW AC charger, while the Long Range variant will include a 7.2kW AC charger along with support for DC fast charging.

Tata’s innovative acti.ev modular platform, designed for the Punch EV, is anticipated to offer a broad range of 300-600km, depending on the specific model and battery configuration. Considering this, a reasonable estimated range for the Punch EV falls within the 300-500km bracket. Notably, this new platform signifies a substantial advancement from the Gen 1 architecture, boasting significant enhancements and modifications over the traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) platform.

INTERIOR AND FEATURES

While Tata Motors has not yet provided a comprehensive glimpse into the interior of the Punch EV, notable changes are expected in this domain as well. The cabin is set to feature a brand-new 10.25-inch touchscreen along with a digital instrument cluster. Other updates include a fresh two-spoke steering wheel design and a distinctive jeweled rotary drive selector situated on the center console. A teaser image on Tata’s official website hints at a redesigned HVAC control panel, incorporating toggle switches and haptic buttons, reminiscent of the layout in the Nexon EV.

In terms of features, the high-end variant of the Punch EV is anticipated to boast a range of amenities, including a 360-degree camera, leatherette seats, an electronic parking brake with auto hold, connected car technology, a wireless charger, ventilated front seats, cruise control, a sunroof, and the introduction of the new Arcade.ev app suite. Notably, several of these features mark a pioneering step for a vehicle of this size, contributing to the overall appeal and innovation of the Punch EV.

PRICING

The Tata Punch EV is strategically targeted at the Citroen eC3, finding its place between the Tiago EV MR and the Nexon EV MR in the lineup. With an expected ex-showroom price ranging between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 13 lakh, the Punch EV aims to offer a compelling option in the electric vehicle market.
