There is good news for electric vehicle owners of Bangalore. More public charging stations will soon be installed in India’s Silicon Valley.

According to reports, Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) has awarded a tender to a private company to set up 225 public charging stations across Bengaluru. According to the tender, 150 charging spots will be in Bengaluru city while 75 will be in Bengaluru rural areas.

The media report quoted a senior BESCOM official as saying, “We had given the tender to Reliance BP Mobility Limited in October to set up the charging infrastructure. They agreed to set up 150 charging stations in Bengaluru city and 75 in Bengaluru rural. Currently, a survey is underway to identify land to set up the infrastructure. Once the survey is completed, they will enter into a 10-year lease contract with the land owning agency. Reliance will bid Rs 2.19 per unit. “

As per recent estimates, the estimated cost of setting up new charging stations in Bangalore is around Rs 35–40 lakh.

Meanwhile, reports claim that BESCOM is planning to set up 1,190 EV charging stations across Karnataka through the public-private partnership (PPP) model. These stations will be equipped with both AC and DC chargers, with a total of 1,190 AC chargers and the same number of DC chargers. Most of these charging stations will be located on government properties.

As per the Central Government guidelines, nodal agencies have been directed to pay a minimum of Rs 1 per unit for charging services. BESCOM has given tender to those who bid more than this rate. Each charging station will have 10 KW AC 001 charger, 7.5 KW Type 2 charger and 60 KW CCS2 charger. CCS2 DC chargers allow two vehicles to be charged simultaneously.

Depending on site requirements, a 10 KW AC 001 charger or a 7.5 KW Type 2 charger will be used. While BESCOM charges Rs 7.38 per unit from users for charging services, Reliance charges Rs 15.99 per unit at other locations. A representative explained that the high tariff charged by Reliance is to ensure profitability and cover the substantial investment required to set up these charging stations.

As of February 15, 2024, Karnataka has emerged as the leading state for EV charging infrastructure in the country with a total of 5,059 charging stations. Maharashtra is at third place with 3,079 stations and Delhi with 1,886 stations. These developments reflect the growing focus in India on building a strong EV charging network, driving the adoption of electric vehicles and reducing carbon emissions.
