Maruti Suzuki, traditionally cautious with new technologies, showcased its eVX electric SUV concept at the Auto Expo 2023. At the Bangkok International Motor Show, parent company Suzuki presented the eWX concept EV, which was later displayed at the Japan Mobility Show. Recently, Suzuki filed a patent for the eWX design in India. While Suzuki classifies the eWX as an EV mini-wagon, it is essentially an electric hatchback.
Here are some key details to know about the patented eWX:
STYLING
The eWX concept, measuring just 3.4 meters long, complies with Japan’s Kei car restrictions. Its boxy, tallboy design appears inspired by the Wagon R, but it is even smaller than the S-Presso sold in India. The patented version remains a concept, featuring no headlamps, a curved windshield extending beyond the A-pillars, and missing B-pillars. It also sports body cladding and fully covered wheel caps.
While Suzuki hasn’t disclosed the eWX’s detailed specifications, it is anticipated to come with a standard single-motor setup. The company previously indicated that this concept could achieve a range of 230 km.
LAUNCH DETAILS
Maruti is yet to reveal details about the eWX’s India launch. However, Autocar previously reported that an eWX-based hatchback will be added to Maruti’s portfolio sometime in 2026-27. This hatchback, designed to rival the Tiago EV and MG Comet EV, will be built on the heavily localized K-EV platform.
In addition to the eWX-based hatchback, Maruti is working on the eVX mid-size electric SUV, which will be its first EV offering in the country, set to directly compete with the upcoming Hyundai Creta EV. The production of the eVX SUV has been rescheduled to February 2025, delayed from the initial target of September 2024.
