It appears that Ather has finally launched the 450 Apex after what has seemed like an extended wait interspersed with numerous teasers. The 450 Apex is priced at Rs 1.89 lakh (ex-showroom). As an attempt to push the current platform to its limits within the safe limits of thermodynamics, the 450 Apex is designed to represent the pinnacle of the platform.
Based on Tarun Mehta’s own words, this is not a commercial project, but rather one of passion. As part of the company’s tenth-anniversary celebration, Ather brought out this scooter just before its all-new (and all-important) family scooter debut. It has been Ather’s constant effort to update and refine the 450 over the last five years, and they claim that the Apex marks the limit of what the current platform is capable of within a safe thermodynamic range.
Performance of the Ather 450 Apex
The power of the 450 has increased by about ten percent, now at 7kW, and is now able to reach a top speed of 100 kilometers per hour. There has been an increase in acceleration as well as a new Warp+ mode being added to the scooter in place of the regular Warp mode. In addition to being extremely quick off the line, Ather says that the 0-40kph run takes only 2.9 seconds rather than 3.3 seconds previously.
Additionally, the TFT display user interface has been revamped to create a ‘warp speed’ appearance in Warp+ mode. There was however something unique about the Ather 450 Apex that is likely to be added to the company’s future product line. This feature is called Magic Twist.
As a result, the scooter gradually slows down until it comes to a complete halt by simply twisting the accelerator backward. Although some electric two-wheelers are already available in India with some degree of regeneration, none have achieved this level of power and efficiency.
A substantial amount of software engineering and hardware modifications were necessary to achieve this, but it was well worth the effort. Although it requires some time to adjust, it reduces the amount of effort required to ride within the city. In most normal slowing-down scenarios, you will be riding without using the brakes because the backward accelerator action has a 15-degree rotation, giving you a good amount of control over the rain.
Apex is visually distinguished by its unique Indium Blue finish. The wheels and chassis, however, are painted a lurid orange. The orange aluminum chassis is also reflected by a transparent side panel created by Ather.
In addition to the fully enclosed belt drive, the Apex shares the rest of the bodywork with the standard 450X. This will be a feature that will also be offered on the rest of the range shortly. In any case, existing scooters may not be compatible with any of the features on the Apex, including the belt cover, which mounts to the swingarm at a different point.
As far as the scooter’s mechanical properties are concerned, it is relatively unchanged, including the 3.7kWh battery pack. Despite this, the claimed range of the vehicle has increased a small amount due to the improved regen, now being 157km (certified) as opposed to 150km previously.
Taking into account state-level subsidies available, the Apex is priced at Rs 1.89 lakh, ex-showroom, which means that its on-road cost will be approximately Rs 30,000-40,000 higher than the top-of-the-line 450X (optioned with the Pro Pack). There will be a limited amount of production based on demand, and Ather plans to continue manufacturing the Apex until October 2024, at which point they will enter their 11th year of operation. Also included are a color-matched helmet and a tire pressure monitoring system.
The Apex will appeal to those who crave exclusivity as well as those who simply wish to own a model that will surely be the highest point the current Ather 450 will ever reach.
